I Never Asked For Nothin’

DK Harris

I NEVER ASKED FOR NOTHING

                                             DK Harris

(country/folk melody with a twang and a hard guitar-edge)

(Verse1)
Now I heard last night you were lookin’ for me
These days I’m a little hard to find
Long time ago I learned how to be
Just one step ahead or one behind
Prowlin’ the shadows with the rest of my kind

 (Verse2)
Learned to dazzle and juggle in a faraway place

That you’ll never get to see
Got a few hard lines etched into my face
But you’ll still know it’s me
Standin’ in the rain while you broke free

(Chorus)
Doomed from the beginning, but we learned CPR
Tryin’ to breathe life into desperate false hope
Sins on the rough upholstery of a brokedown stolen car
I never asked for nothin’ once I hit that slippery slope
You were thinkin’ I just couldn’t cope
Found me a fight in some godforsaken land
I found a bullet, you found a wedding band

 (Short Instrumental Break)

(Verse3)
Every fallow field holds a memory in this used-up land
Guess it’s both a blessing and a curse
Never had the common sense to truly understand
You just don’t put that car in reverse
Only gonna make it worse

(Verse4)
Came back to tend my daddy’s grave

Do my duty and pluck the weeds
All the things I tried not to crave
Come rushin’ back to me at breakneck speed
You said, ‘Love, little boy, shouldn’t feel like greed.’

(Bridge)
So maybe you were the last of the Mohicans,
Takin’ your very last stand
And maybe you found what you were seekin’
Down to the very last man
While I fired into the darkness, in the deserts of Afghanistan
I never asked for nothin’, so put away that helping hand
Just point me out to your brand new friends and tell ‘em therein walks a man

(Longer instrumental break)

(Closing Chorus)
Doomed from the beginning, but we pounded that CPR

Tryin’ to blow a pulse of fire into dyin’ embers of hope
Ragin’ in the bucket seats of a brokedown abandoned car
I never asked for nothin’ on the downside of that slippery slope
You were thinkin’ I just couldn’t cope

But that was the boy, darlin’, and this is a man
I ain’t asking for nothin’ today
So put away your helping hand
Don’t need to see the tan line from your pawn shop wedding band
